US surveillance balloons for Tunisia

According to the journalist Philippe Chapleau from the website “Lignes de défense”, Tunisia could obtain observation balloons from the United States.

This initiative is part of the Department of Justice’s program (International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program or ICITAP). The United States plans to provide 3 or 4 observation aerostats to Tunisia. The potential market also includes team training and support.

These captive balloons, fully equipped (EO / IR, radar, real-time video stream…), will have the mission to identify terrorist groups and facilitate their neutralization, particularly along the borders of Algeria and Libya.

In addition to supplying captive balloons, the US is providing military aid to Tunisia. On October 10, the State Department gave the green light to the sale of 12 Texan T-6C training aircraft (manufactured by Textron) and the supply of spare parts worth $ 234 million.

Tunisia will host the African Lion 2020 exercise (next March and April) in the Cap Serrat region.
