First test for the Umkhonto IR missile in Algeria

Today, 05 December 2019, a Meko A200 frigate belonging to Algerian naval forces conducted an anti-aircraft missile test, by firing one south African Umkhonto IR.

The test took place off Oran during a combined military exercise. The target was hit precisely, it was a Mirach target drone that was pulling a flare.

The Algerian Meko has 32 built-in vertical launchers on the deck, the missile offers protection against planes, helicopters and drones over a distance of 20 km.

The South African missile test comes ten days after South Africa announced the suspension of arms export licenses to some Arab countries including Algeria.
